Memory Care: comprehensive support for seniors

At the Origin Otwock Centre, we run a specialised MemoryCare programme dedicated to older adults living with dementia or requiring daily support due to age-related challenges.

Our approach combines high-quality medical care, individually tailored therapies, and a warm, homely atmosphere. Drawing on our team’s experience and dedication, we provide comprehensive assistance that helps people with dementia maintain the highest possible quality of life – supporting their independence, dignity, and well-being every day.

Who is the SeniorCare programme for?

A stay at the Origin Otwock Centre offers a “new chapter in life” for people living with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and various non-specific memory disorders related to illness or ageing.

Our specially adapted wards – each housing approximately 10 to 13 residents with a similar degree of illness – ensure a sense of safety, foster a homely atmosphere, and create conditions that encourage social interaction and therapeutic activation.

What does the MemoryCare programme offer?

A dedicated section of the Origin Otwock Centre has been created exclusively for the comprehensive care of people with dementia, with a particular focus on Alzheimer’s disease. Every detail – from interior design to lighting and colour schemes – has been thoughtfully planned to support orientation, reduce tension, minimise episodes of aggression, and alleviate symptoms of depression.

Our specialist team applies the principles of gerontological validation – helping residents navigate reality while accepting and respecting their feelings and emotions. This approach provides consistent daily support, promoting comfort, dignity, and the best possible quality of life for our senior patients.

At Origin Otwock, one of our top priorities is to help seniors maintain their independence and physical fitness for as long as possible. Our centre’s beautiful forest location offers the perfect setting for daily walks under the supervision of caregivers, along scenic, paved paths surrounded by nature.

The MemoryCare programme includes:

  • accommodation in a single or double room,
  • five nutritious meals a day,
  • 24-hour nursing and personal care, along with regular medical visits,
  • an individual therapeutic programme tailored to the resident’s needs,
  • engaging group activities,
  • regular specialist consultations,
  • periodic diagnostic reports on the patient’s condition.

Types of stay available:

  • long-term care stays,
  • short-term and respite stays (ideal for temporary support or caregiver relief).

Forms of occupational therapy in MemoryCare

The primary and most comprehensive form of activity in SeniorCare is occupational therapy. Each session is designed to provide holistic activation for the patient, focusing on preserving their strengths and supporting independence for as long as possible through simple, everyday activities.

At every stage of work with the patient, we emphasise open and subtle forms of memory training (e.g. planning, concentration). Group activities, such as sociotherapy, also play an important role by encouraging joint participation and fostering new social connections.

Our care philosophy: understanding and individualised support

At Origin Otwock, our approach to caring for people with dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, is rooted in a holistic methodology that blends evidence-based medicine (EBM) with a deep understanding of each patient’s unique needs. We draw on proven care models, adapting them to each resident’s abilities, preferences, and stage of illness:

  • Naomi Feil’s Gerontological Validation is about following the patient’s reality and engaging with their world – this requires highly experienced staff;
  • Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care Nursing Model: providing help only where needed, while encouraging the patient to do what they are still able to do independently;
  • Virginia Henderson’s Nursing Theory: assisting when the patient lacks the strength, will, or knowledge to regain full independence as quickly as possible;
  • Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care is focussed on understanding the reasons behind a patient’s behaviour and responding with empathy and skill;
  • Hanna Chrzanowska’s Care Model: extending nursing activities to address the patient’s spiritual needs;
  • The Montessori Method: stimulating cognitive functions, supporting the recovery of daily living skills, and fostering social connections through an adapted environment and personalised activities.

Snoezelen room

The World Experience Room, also known as a Snoezelen, is a specially designed space that provides safe, carefully controlled, and stimulating sensory experiences. As part of the MemoryCare programme at the Origin Otwock Centre, Snoezelen therapy aims to enhance residents’ quality of life by supporting their physical, emotional, and mental well-being through tailored sensory stimulation.

Aims of Snoezelen therapy

The primary aim of Snoezelen room therapy is to relieve tension, reduce stress and anxiety, and stimulate the senses in a calm, therapeutic way. This approach is especially beneficial for people with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive disorders, as well as for seniors seeking tranquillity and relaxation. Snoezelen therapy helps to:

  • increase feelings of security and comfort – a calm, controlled environment promotes relaxation;
  • reduce aggression and self-aggression – by lowering frustration and agitation;
  • improve mood and overall well-being – by evoking positive emotions and memories;
  • stimulate cognitive functions – gentle sensory stimuli can activate memory and concentration;
  • support non-verbal communication – encouraging responses to sensory experiences;
  • enable deep relaxation and calmness – in a safe, soothing space;
  • improve sleep quality – by reducing stress and tension.

Qualification for the programme

Enrolment in the programme is based on a detailed review of the patient’s medical records, an assessment of their current health status, and an interview with their family or relatives. Participation in the SeniorCare programme does not require a referral, and the programme itself is tailored to each resident’s medical needs and overall condition.

A decision on eligibility is made within a few days of receiving the completed documentation by our team. The decision is then communicated directly to the applicants.

Consultation on rehabilitation capacity

Often, patients and their loved ones hear that there is no hope, that nothing more can be done for them. Many of them, after accidents or illnesses, feel alone and unsure about what comes next. We see the confusion in their eyes and the fear of the unknown.

That’s why we created a special consultation with our specialists, which is more than just an assessment of health. It is a thorough meeting aimed at determining the real potential for rehabilitation. It is a moment when we say:

We understand your situation. This is how we assess your potential.
We are here to help you realize it together.
